Nigeria international and captain of the Super Eagles Mikel Obi has completed a move to English Championship club Middlesbrough after passing his medical test on Tuesday, January 22.
German club Wolfsburg and Italian giants Roma were said to be closely monitoring Mikel Obi for the possibility of getting his signature, but the ex Chelsea star decided to return to England.
According to the report by UK Sun, Mikel Obi traveled to the United Kingdom on Tuesday morning, January 22, before he had his medical examination at the Riverside stadium.
Mikel Obi has been playing in the Chinese Super League for the past two years with Tianjin Teda after leaving Premier League side Chelsea where he won two English topflight titles.
The report added that Boro decided to sign Mikel so that he can help the team in their fight to return to the Premier League division.
Tony Pulis’ side are currently occupying fifth position on the Championship standings and seven points off leaders Leeds.
Middlesbrough will face Newport County on Saturday, January 26, in their fourth round FA Cup tie in which Mikel is expected to make his debut for the club.
The news is also expected to be a cheering one for Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr as Mikel will be leading his team to the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt.
A Poorly performing Premier League club Crystal Palace were said to have shown interest in signing Nigerian midfielder John Mikel Obi until the end of the season.
The Super Eagles captain ran out of contract with the Chinese Super League side this month after the Tianjin Tigers failed to extend his stay at the club.
